Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is one of the most important data center systems. The continuity and quality of your servers operating depend on the stability and parameters of UPS. UPS solves such the problems as voltage regulating, impulse noise filtering, as well as ensuring backup power supply for your equipment in a case external power supply failure.

There are three basic components in a Data Center UPS design:

1. Uninterruptible power supplies and batteries.

2. Reserve entry automates.

3. Diesel generators.

Each component performs its role in general scheme, and your data center stability and continuity depend on the literacy of their connection.

Uninterruptible power supply devices

UPS devices are responsible for filtering and stabilizing voltage from external power supply and from diesel generator. Also UPS using the batteries connected provide your infrastructure with the power in the cases of short-term supply disruptions, when it’s not rational to use a diesel generator.

The pure sine wave power with no phase or amplitude distortions is critical for your server hardware correct operating. In our projects we strongly suggest to use the on-line type UPS, which could ensure the required voltage characteristics. UPS devices are the required component, which must be present in any UPS system.

Reserve entry automates

REA switches supply entry between the primary (from the city mains) and reserve (from diesel generator) circuits. Its main task - along with UPS to ensure a smooth switch between two sources of energy with no disrupts for your servers.

 
REA can monitor the status of external power supply, providing correct start and stop of diesel generator.

Proper configuration of REA improves vitality and longevity of your uninterruptible power supply system. In our projects we use the “one-solenoid” REAs, which reduce switching time to milliseconds, eliminate "frizzing" of switch contacts and help to ensure the high reliability of UPS system as a whole.

Diesel generators

Diesel generators provide your data center with backup power when external power supply is off for a long time. They allow to ensure stable operation of your data center for almost unlimited time.

 
When choosing diesel generator, the quality is the most important characteristic. Therefore, the best practice is to use diesel generator from the serious manufacturer.

To ensure the stable operating of you diesel generators, thus, of all the other systems in your data center, the following of your backup power supply system is to be made professionally:

• design of all the necessary communications;

• equipment choosing;

• system installation and start-up.

It is necessary for diesel generator to ensure strong vibration and noise insulation, uninterrupted automatic fuel supply, remote key parameters control, correct exhaust gases removal as well as fulfillment of all the appropriate state standard specifications (especially if your data center is located in the center of a city). These are the tasks of "FLEX-Integration" designers, engineers and installers.

Place in a data center structure

UPS system serves as an intermediary between external power entry and a data-center internal power distribution network. Purified and stabilized voltage goes from UPS system to internal terminals and then is distributed onto specific racks.

Note: when a specific group of servers requires additional protection, it could be ensured by additional local UPS within internal power lines.
