The Green Grid Issues New Water, Energy and Data Center Compute Efficiency Metrics

Tuesday, 09 August 2011 18:39

The Green Grid (www.thegreengrid.org) launched three new metrics at its annual Technical Forum.

Water Usage Effectiveness, first announced in December 2010, was one of the measurements released last week. The other two metrics include Energy Reuse Effectiveness and Data Center Compute Efficiency.

WUE assesses the water used on-site to operate a data center, including water used for humidification and water evaporated for energy production or cooling of the facility.

ERE measures the benefit of reusing energy from a data center, giving operators the tools to identify and recover energy from their data center.

DCcE allows data center operators to understand the efficiency of compute resources and is used as a metric to determine data center productivity.

According to the report, the Green Grid has released various tools to assist data center managers and operators as well.

For example, the Green Grid's Data Center Maturity Model helps operators "determine how resource-efficient their facilities are from minimal to visionary." This system evaluates many parts of the data center from power and cooling to storage and network systems.

At the end of February The Green Grid announced that its Power Usage Effectiveness metric was established by a task force as the recommended metric for measuring energy efficiency in data centers in Japan, US and the UK.

A chart from a whitepaper about The Green Grid's data center maturity model illustrates progress for different data centers.

FLEX-Integration completed the project of the server room equipment at Platinum Bank

Friday, 15 July 2011 11:40

The principle of separation of air flow through the "cold" and "hot" corridors was put on the basis of the cooling system. The construction of the raised floor has increased the possibility of the room cooling. The result was the reliable cooling system with a level of redundancy N +1.
Emerson Network Power conditioners were used as the equipment. Gas fire suppression system was based on innovative environmentally friendly gas Novec 1230, 3M Corporation’s product.
To ensure uninterruptable power supply of the equipment the distribution system was created with the level of redundancy 2N.

Screening of the server room was implemented with the modular design screen . The screen was certified for compliance with the NBU’s standards.
The results of the project were estimated by the Customer positively. This project became a good embodiment of the DataFLEX concept - FLEX-Integration company’s proprietary", which is based on a flexible modular approach to solving problems of any complexity. DataFLEX suggests the possibility of the construction and further development of the server room balanced modules, when the power of IT equipment increases along with increasing of power of all elements of physical infrastructure with the given step.

FLEX-Integration adopted in the work BICSI 002

Friday, 27 May 2011 00:00

In keeping with its desire to occupy a leading market position on Data Center market, FLEX-Integration company continues to verify its work with the latest requirements of the world's leading standards. In spring 2011, our company has introduced to the work of a new standard for Data Centers BICSI 002-2010, which became one of the most important recent developments in the standardization of Data Center building.

With the push for greater capacity, increased efficiency and higher levels of utilization, data centers have become more complex to design and bring on-line. Due to this, today’s data center designer is often required to have knowledge in mechanical, electrical and telecommunications systems — areas not typically found in the same reference manuals or standards. BICSI 002 addresses this need. Written to complement existing standards, within its pages are requirements, recommendations and additional information that should be considered when planning and building a data centre, such as site selection, layout, thermal systems and security.

“BICSI 002 is a great resource for data center designers and operators because it provides a wealth of information on the subjects important to this audience—all in one place,” said Jonathan Jew, Co-chair of the Data Center Standards Subcommittee and lead editor of the standard. “It is the culmination of the efforts of more than 150 subject matter experts in a wide variety of disciplines related to data center design.”

The important point which increases for our company the value of the new standard is that the emphasis in BISCI 002 placed on improving of the efficiency of Data Centers and Data Center design with long-term perspective of exploitation. This is entirely consistent with the basic principles under which FLEX-Integration designs and builds Data Centers: improving of PUE and minimizing of TCO.
